The Christmas gift that read as a comment

What happened

A holiday ad showed a woman receiving an exercise bike from her husband and documenting a year of using it. The internet read her expression as fear, parodies followed, and the company's market value dropped by around a fifth in the following days.

What went wrong

Nothing in it was offensive by policy. It simply framed a thin woman being given fitness equipment by her husband at Christmas — a gender dynamic the audience decoded instantly and the brand did not.

The rule

Not every failure is a taboo. Some are a subtext you did not notice because everyone in the room shared the same assumption.

Takeaway

Show the cut to people who are not your target customer and ask them what the ad is about.
