What happened
A November 2022 campaign photographed children holding teddy-bear bags in bondage-style harnesses. A separate shoot included, in the background, printed pages from a US Supreme Court ruling on child pornography law. Balenciaga pulled both, apologised and sued its production partners.
What went wrong
Two independent lapses landed in the same week, so the audience read intent where the brand claimed accident. Once children plus fetish imagery are in the same frame, no explanation gets a hearing.
The rule
Children are the one category where 'edgy' has no upside. Props and background documents are part of the creative and need the same sign-off.
Takeaway
Have one person whose only job on a shoot is to read every visible piece of paper.
